SAFESENSE EMERGENCY TRAINING VIDEO
Knowing How Is Half The Battle!
Knowing how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) device can be the difference between life and death during a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) event.

Remember, quick action, in combination with proper CPR and AED usage, significantly increases the chances of survival. Stay informed, be prepared, and be ready to act when every second counts.
In emergency situations where someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), quick action can make a life-saving difference. One crucial tool that can significantly increase the chances of survival is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) device. AEDs are designed to deliver electric shocks to the heart, restoring its normal rhythm. In this blog, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to use an AED device effectively, empowering you to potentially save a life when every second counts.

CPR is also essential in preventing brain damage and other long-term health problems that can arise due to a lack of oxygen supply to the brain..
Step 1: Assess the Situation Before utilizing an AED device, ensure the safety of both yourself and the victim. Verify that the victim is unresponsive and not breathing or gasping for breath. If you suspect SCA, immediately call emergency services or ask someone nearby to do so.
Step 2: Locate an AED AEDs are often placed in public spaces, workplaces, schools, and community centers. Locate the nearest AED by following the signs or asking someone nearby. Time is critical, so retrieve the AED as quickly as possible.
Step 3: Prepare the Victim Gently lay the victim on their back on a flat surface. Expose their chest by cutting or removing any clothing, if necessary. Ensure the victim’s chest is dry for optimal AED pad adhesion.
Step 4: Power Up the AED Once you have the AED device, turn it on by pressing the power button. Most AEDs have clear visual and voice prompts that guide users through the process.
Step 5: Attach the AED Pads Unpack the adhesive pads from the AED and remove them from their packaging. Attach the pads to the victim’s bare chest as indicated by the diagrams on the pads. Typically, one pad is placed on the upper right side of the chest and the other on the lower left side. Ensure the pads are firmly attached.
Step 6: Analyze the Heart Rhythm The AED will automatically analyze the victim’s heart rhythm through the attached pads. During this process, everyone should avoid touching the victim to prevent interference. The AED will provide prompts and display whether or not a shock is advised.
Step 7: Stand Clear and Deliver a Shock If the AED determines that a shock is necessary, it will provide clear instructions to deliver the shock. Ensure that no one is touching the victim or any wet surfaces. Once you have cleared the area, press the shock button as directed. The AED will deliver a controlled electric shock to the heart to attempt to restore a normal rhythm.
Step 8: Perform CPR After delivering the shock, immediately resume CPR starting with chest compressions. Follow the recommended compression-to-ventilation ratio (usually 30 compressions to 2 breaths) until further instructions are given by the AED or medical professionals arrive.
Step 9: Follow Additional AED Prompts Continue following the AED’s prompts, which will provide further guidance based on the victim’s condition. This may include prompts for additional shocks or instructions to resume CPR.
Step 10: Handover to Medical Professionals Once medical professionals arrive, hand over the victim’s care to them. Provide them with any information they may need about the situation and the actions you’ve taken.
